Profile

The United States of America is a country in North America. It consists of 50 states and a federal district. The biggest sector of the US economy is the retail industry.

The U.S bond market is represented by government, municipal and corporate securities.

The U.S. government bond market is the largest, most reliable and liquid in the world. It is represented by United States Treasury bonds (issued by the United States Department of the Treasury to finance government spending) and by non-marketable securities. United States Treasury securities include Treasury bills (short-term securities maturing in one year or less at par), Treasury notes (interest-bearing securities with 2, 3, 5, 7, and 10-year maturities), Treasury bonds (interest-bearing maturities over 10 years), and Treasury Inflation Protected Securities (TIPS) (provide investors with protection against inflation). These securities are sold in auctions conducted by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, after which they can be traded in secondary markets. Non-marketable securities are represented by savings bonds (Series EE and Series I bonds), issued to the public and transferable only as gifts, the State and Local Government Series (SLGS), purchasable only with the proceeds of state and municipal bond sales and the Government Account Series, purchased by units of the federal government.

U.S. municipal bond market includes individuals, insurance companies, banks, hedge funds, family offices and mutual funds. Mutual funds hold approximately 20% of outstanding municipal debt, with 80% held by other investors. The key holders of U.S. municipal securities are households and nonprofits.

U.S. corporate bonds represent about 12% of outstanding investment-grade debt worldwide.
